et in the beautiful Dorsetcountryside near Christchurch, Sopley Mill is one of those wedding venues that immediately feels a little different.
The historic mill building is full of character, with exposed brickwork, original beams and reminders of its working past throughout the venue. Outside, the river runs through the grounds, creating a wonderfully relaxed setting with plenty of space for guests to enjoy the day.
For Louise and Jonathan’s wedding, we were lucky enough to visit on a gorgeous summer’s day — and Sopley Millreally came into its own.
A Beautiful Riverside Wedding Venue
One of the things we loved about Sopley Mill was the amount of outdoor space available.
The lawns gave guests plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the sunshine, with nine-hole crazy golf, cornhole and football keeping both adults and children entertained.
With the water, mature trees and open lawn areas surrounding the mill, it created a lovely informal atmosphere. Guests were able to move between the gardens, terrace and mill throughout the afternoon rather than being confined to one room.
On the day of Louise and Jonathan’s wedding, the weather was firmly on their side and guests continued enjoying the gardens until around 9pm.
Our Photo Booth Setup
For this wedding we provided our heart-shaped photo booth, together with a rustic wooden backdrop that worked perfectly with the character of the venue.
Our boothwas located in The Boat Room on the ground floor.
Space in this part of the mill is fairly limited, so getting the positioning and flow right takes a little thought, but it does work. We created a complete photo booth area including props, the booth itself and our attended guest book station.
And, as always, the guest book became much more than somewhere to stick photographs.
Guests added copies of their photo booth prints alongside handwritten messages for Louise and Jonathan, creating something for them to take away and look back through after the wedding.
The Boat Room – Something Worth Thinking About
This is where having actually worked at a venue gives us a useful perspective.
Sopley Mill is spread over several floors, with the main evening celebration and disco taking place on the top floor.
The Boat Room is on the ground floor and is slightly separate from the main evening reception area. During Louise and Jonathan’s wedding this wasn't a major problem because the weather was so good.
Guests were regularly passing through the ground floor while enjoying the gardens, meaning the photo booth remained part of the action during the afternoon and early evening.
Later in the evening, however, once guests move upstairs for the disco, a booth positioned downstairs can naturally become more isolated.
That doesn't mean the Boat Room isn't suitable — it simply means timing becomes important.
Our Tip for Couples Booking a Photo Booth at Sopley Mill
If your photo booth is going to be positioned downstairs in the Boat Room, we'd recommend starting it around 6:00–6:30pm and certainly no later.
That allows guests to enjoy the booth while they're still moving between the gardens and ground-floor areas.
On a summer wedding like Louise and Jonathan's, it works particularly well.
If you're planning an autumn or winter wedding, or the weather means guests are unlikely to use the outdoor areas, we'd recommend discussing whether a suitable position can be created upstairs instead.
An upstairs booth keeps the experience closer to the evening entertainment and also means a later start time can comfortably be considered.
It's a small piece of planning, but one that can make a big difference to how much use your photo booth receives.
A Venue Full of Character
Inside, Sopley Mill retains so much of its original personality.
Exposed brick, huge timber beams and pieces of the original mill machinery give the building an authenticity that simply can't be recreated in a modern venue.
Then you reach the top-floor reception room.
With its high ceiling, exposed structure, brick walls and hundreds of warm fairy lights running across the beams, it transforms beautifully for a wedding breakfast before becoming the main party space later in the evening.
It is a wonderful contrast to the intimate rooms downstairs.

Louise and Jonathan's wedding was a brilliant opportunity for us to experience Sopley Mill properly rather than simply seeing it as another wedding venue.
A beautiful sunny day, gardens full of guests, plenty of laughter coming from the photo booth and a guest book gradually filling with photographs and personal messages.
We also found the Sopley Mill team friendly and helpful throughout our visit, which always makes a difference when suppliers are working across such an unusual building.
